Tranquil Agitation

For 10 Electric Fans, 2 Alto Saxophones, Trumpet, Flugel Horn, Electronic Tape and Tryptich

2022

Tranquil Agitation is a multifaceted composition utilising a combination of visual art and music in the promotion of a critical self-reflection when approaching experiences of anxiety and discomfort. It is the third and largest outcome of a yearlong project, concerned with the presentation of both the physical and emotional effects of eczema using a musical recontextualization of key everyday objects tied closely to experiences with the condition. The piece utilises the electric fan as a symbol of cooling, as previously explored within Attempted Soothing and Soothing, exploring the textural and musical applications of electric fans when supported by harmonic instrumental material. This is accompanied by electronic manipulations of the fan and instrumental material to enhance the textural capabilities of the electronic fan, alongside a physical representation of the physical symptoms of eczema as found within the triptych below.
